What Is a Limited Palette in Watercolor? Why It Makes You a Better Painter
A limited color palette means using only a few colors to mix all of your other colors, instead of using all of your colors to make even more colors. Sticking to just four or five colors for a whole painting can make your paintings more balanced and help you understand color better.
Why This Matters
Having every color available can stunt your understanding of color. With a limited palette, you have to mix the shades you want from the few colors you chose, instead of sneaking in a dip of black for a shadow.
It also makes your painting more balanced. When you use the same few colors throughout, you can use them to push and pull between the foreground and the background.
This isn't a knock on half pans. They are easy and accessible, especially if you want to take your paintings on adventures.
Try This
Pick out four or five tube colors and paint a whole painting using only those. Mix the shades you need from that small set. It helps you focus your learning of color, which is the basis of your watercolor paintings.
