Meet The Studio
How it Works
A place to learn, practice, and actually paint. The Studio is a fun, adventure-filled, supportive watercolor community built around landscapes! You always have something to paint, something to practice, and people to paint beside. Here’s how it works:
🎥 Start of every month: a live paint-along on one skill. We paint a landscape together, live, and you can ask questions as you go. Each month has a focus, like clouds, trees, value, or sunsets and sunrises. Can’t make it? It’s recorded.
Quarterly Sessions: Four times a year, we swap the paint-along for something different, like a member walking us through how she got her work into galleries.
🗓 Every week: a new reference photo. No step-by-step to follow. Just a photo, and you decide how to paint it: where to start, what to keep, what to leave out. Use it to practice the month’s skill, then see how other members handled the same one. Members say it takes about 30-90 minutes. There’s no schedule and no falling behind if you miss a week (or a few).

If you can follow a tutorial but feel lost on your own, this is where that changes. In this live class, I’ll show you how to look at a reference and make your own decisions: where to start, what to paint first, how to build up your layers, all the way to a finished painting. It’s live, so bring your questions. Recording included.
First skill: Clouds (starting in November)
Our first monthly paint-along is clouds. We’ll paint them together live, then you’ll practice all month with the weekly references.

You start with a reference that's already chosen. There's nothing to search for, so there's nothing to put off. Best part? The photos are from the community members!

The weekly references have no step-by-step, so you practice making your own decisions. The monthly paint-along is live, so you paint instead of watch. And From Reference to Finished Painting shows you how to go from a photo to a finished painting: what to paint first, how to layer, when to let it dry.

It's one sitting a week, about 60-90 minutes, and you paint when it suits you. Miss a week and you pick up with the next reference.
“What should I paint?”
A new reference every week, plus a growing library. You never spend your painting time searching.
“Color mixing, water control, depth, composition, looseness.”
Each month focuses on one of these skills, and the weekly references let you practice it. We also paint what lives in a landscape: buildings, color, animals, and figures. And when you're stuck, you can ask.
“What if I mess it up?”
The Studio is a low-stakes place to practice. Everyone has painted something they didn't love. You'll see other painters' work in progress, ugly stages included.

Inside The Studio, we're filling daily sketchbooks, painting our own cards, and creating painted gifts for loved ones.
⛰️Take it outside!
A lot of us dream of painting outdoors, on a trip, at a campsite, or just out the back door. In the Studio, you practice the skills at home, like simplifying a big scene, reading values, and painting trees and skies. Then you take them with you.
Members paint on road trips, on vacation, and wherever they find a free hour, and some of them joined me on last summer’s painting retreat.

Hi, I’m Juliene!
I’m a color educator and landscape watercolorist - and my goal is simple:
👉 to help you paint more… and paint better.
Why? Because I’ve experienced firsthand what painting can do.
It’s helped me work through hard seasons.
It’s improved my mental health.
It’s given me something to be proud of - and a way to grow.
And I’ve seen that same thing happen for so many other people, too!
Back in 2018, after years of creating large-scale acrylic paintings, I switched things up and fell in love with watercolor landscapes.
They gave me something new:
🎨 the ability to travel with my supplies
🎨 to paint my surroundings and experiences
🎨 and most importantly - to paint more often
Then, in 2024, I had a simple idea:
Start a challenge where we all painted the same reference photo… and shared our work.
Honestly, it started as something for me - a way to stay consistent in my own practice.
But something unexpected happened ...
👉People started showing up.
They started painting consistently and they started improving! And even more than that…
🌟 they started connecting
🌟 encouraging each other
🌟 making friends through their art
What started as a simple idea turned into something really special.
Over time, though, the free challenge became harder to sustain - and I realized I wanted something more. And so did the challenge members.
Not just a place to post…but a space where we could:

👉 and explore watercolor landscapes together in a more meaningful way
That’s how The Studio came to be.
It’s a continuation of everything that worked - but in a more supportive, intentional space.
