About the Parks: Yellowstone and the Tetons

Yellowstone National Park was established in 1872 as the world’s first national park - a place so geologically alive and ecologically rich that it became a mecca for wildlife enthusiasts, explorers, and artists alike. Here, steaming geysers, mineral-rich springs, sweeping valleys, and roaming herds create a landscape unlike anywhere else on earth, where color is shaped by heat, time, and movement beneath the surface.

Yellowstone flows seamlessly south into Grand Teton National Park via the Yellowstone-Teton Corridor, one of the most intact and wild ecosystems in North America. The Tetons rise abruptly from the valley floor-sharp, dramatic, and impossibly elegant-offering a striking contrast to Yellowstone’s expansive, volcanic terrain. As beautiful as the Tetons appear in photographs, their scale, light, and presence are even more breathtaking in person, leaving a lasting imprint on how you see landscape, color, and space.

Meet the Hosts

Juliene is a watercolor landscape artist who lives near Yellowstone National Park! Each year, she returns to the same route through Yellowstone and the Tetons with her family, an experience that continually shapes her relationship with color, landscape, and place. Juliene is endlessly inspired by the wild aesthetics, shifting light, and nuanced colors of the Greater Yellowstone ecosystem, and brings that lived experience into both her painting and teaching. She's known for her enthusiastic and laid back watercolor teaching style, and can't wait to paint with you!

Greg is an outdoor adventure guide based in Walla Walla, Washington, with a deep love for being active, learning new skills, and spending time in wild places! Through his company, Adventure-Fit, he creates experiences that make exploring the natural world feel approachable, fun, and safe for people of all experience levels. Greg enjoys sharing his favorite places to paddle, hike, ski, and snowshoe, and often collaborates with local businesses to create thoughtful, well-rounded adventures. He's the adventure and logistics brain behind this retreat!

Painting Information

Yellowstone and the Tetons are truly inspiring places for you to enjoy your painting practice! I live very close to Yellowstone and visit it regularly. I am constantly in awe of how different the Earth looks here - the geysers, mud pots, colors, and hydrothermal bacteria create sights that look other-wordly!

The wide open spaces, colors and textures, and mind-bogglingly beautiful hydrogeologic features are a painter's delight. We'll enjoy painting the various locations and you'll leave with painted memories you'll cherish forever.

On the retreat, I'll provide painting instruction at the various locations including, but not limited to, composition, watercolor techniques, use of color, sketching, and layering.

Painting supplies are not included on this trip. Painting supplies are highly custom to you and your own preferences. As an avid adventure painter, I know you'll benefit from having your own supplies anyway!  Here are the recommended supplies with links to purchase if need be:

  • Watercolor journal
  • Painting palette (with mixing surface included on palette)
  • Paintbrushes in travel kit
  • White gouache
  • A pencil
  • One rag
  • A small water bottle or container for wash water
  • A light-weight and comfortable chair to sit in on site (I personally just sit on a step, a rock, or the ground!)

For fun, here are a few of my Yellowstone inspired paintings ...

What's your Adventure and Painting Level?

This retreat has fairly mellow activity level. Most days we'll be walking no more than a one or two miles, with options for some of the group to explore a bit more if they wish.

New to painting or camping? No problem, I'll provide painting instructions for you and Greg will ensure you're cozy as a purring kitty in camp :)
